It was and still is the best weather app available.Īpple's updated Weather app is definitely prettier than it was and offers more information about current conditions than it did before. It's still inferior in the way it presents information and in the amount of information that is available to you. I don’t know what that contract looks like but I bet there are large amounts involved. Dark Sky has worked great for me and I wish Apple had just taken the exact same app and rebranded it “Weather” and broke the ties with TWC. Privacy got murkier after the Apple acquisition of course, but I still try to avoid TWC like the plague. Also Dark Sky has a great interface and it’s still better than the Weather app even after the iOS 15 makeover. One of the main reasons that I switched to Dark Sky was that TWC had at the time bought up the independent weather app that I was using and Dark Sky seemed to be the only one where their privacy policy explicitly stated that they would not sell or share data with third parties. TWC sells the location data to third parties. If they still use The Weather Channel as their data source then I will not use the app until Apple switches away from them. I would think that most people use the radar map to see if a storm is headed their way, not to see what the temperatures are like in their area. Hopefully they will set precipitation as the default in a later release and also let us change which map shows up for us. I can’t think of how they think that is useful. In the end, I think Apple will kill off DS and will rename its current Weather App “Dark Sky.”Īlso, which data source is more accurate, Dark Sky or Weather Channel?Īgreed, the map defaulting to temperature and not precipitation is a really weird decision. I am interested in hearing how others are deciding on which app to use and trust. I guess Apple has some sort of contract with The Weather Channel, so it has to use their data for the time being. I have noticed that Apple continues to use the Weather Channel for its data source, and it does vary compared to DS. On my phone, it is clear Apple has started to merge some of DS’s technology into the Weather App (Real-time weather notifications, weather maps). The conditions option that displays on the icon is fantastic. I swapped out DS for the Weather App on the watch face, and I have not looked back. A few thoughts and I am eager to hear how others are managing the dual weather apps.ĭark Sky has become almost unusable (potentially on purpose) for the Apple Watch. I have been exploring moving to the Weather App over Dark Sky. I have been impressed with the new Weather App in iOS 15. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
